"The first Tucumcari cemetery was located west of the city and north of the current location of the cemetery. A new cemetery known as "Sunnyside" was later begun. The first burials took place about 1903. This name was changed in the late 1930s, to Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery after completion by the CCC boys of a rock wall surrounding the cemetery. The Civic Works Committee announced in 1935 the opening of the acreage west of, and adjoining the cemetery, enlarging the cemetery from eight to more than 30 acres." --Don McAlavy

Anniston Cemetery

Anniston Cemetery is located in Quay County, NM ten miles north on HiWay 39, one half mile east of San Jon, New Mexico.

Located in 2 & 1/2 miles east of Highway 18 South of Plaza Larga on private property.

BOYLES Cemetery

Located in Quay County, two miles south, three and one half miles west of House, NM.

Surveyed Oct. 6, 1979 by Don McAlavy and Harold Kilmer. Only one lone Woodman of the World tombstone was found on date of survey. John Sparks says that when he was a kid (in the 1930s) there was a double row of graves at this site and most of them had markers.

This grave was moved to the House Cemetery about 1993 and now (1999) nothing exists to indicate there ever was a cemetery.

BRITT Cemetery

Located on east side of Caballo Lake northeast of House, NM and one mile southeast of Britt Springs.

Surveyed Oct. 6, 1979 by Ike Stanford, Don McAlavy and Harold Kilmer. Jewel Ray showed us the site. New Mexico.

COW SPRINGS Cemetery

"Back around 1950 Levi Whiteman and I visited my friend Jake Van Sweden, once a linotype operator I worked with at Chick Taylor Press. He had married a woman whose folks homesteaded on the now south shore of Ute Lake. The homestead was near Cow Springs (in Quay County). Levi and I explored the area and found a little cemetery we called Cow Springs Cemetery.

"It was on land originally owned by Selso Garcia, one mile east of Cow Springs. Jake Van Sweden eventually moved to northeast Oklahoma. His son Bob now, or did, owns the ranch Selso Garcia used to have. I stopped by Jake's home in Oklahoma a few years ago and he told me his wife, Ruth, and a baby son was buried in this cemetery too.

HANLEY Cemetery

The cemetery is located ten miles west of Tucumcari, on the east slope of a slight hill, in a native prairie grass and mesquite pasture of a privately owned ranch. Earliest burial found was May 7, 1902. Hanley, N.M. (ruins about 1 mile north) had a post office from 1908 to 1918.

Surveyed by Don McAlavy, with assistance from Juanita Wallis, Bud Hefley, and Kathy McAlavy on Monday, April 3, 2000, at 9:30 a.m.

EWINGS, Lucy Florence, wife of Frank Ewings, born Oct. 10, 1886, died May 22, 1904, Daughter of R. M. Ogle.(R. M. Ogle was probably Mack Ogle, son of founder of Ogle, N.M., David Proffit Ogle. The grave has a 30" high, 8 inch square, white marble tombstone, with an ornate iron fence surrounding the grave.)

Some 13 unidentified graves are marked by a native rock with no identification, or a depression in the ground. Perhaps more graves, but their location has been lost to time and exposure to the elements.

Located in Quay County, NM. One mile west of Nara Visa, NM on gravel road north of RR tracks.

Surveyed Sept. 17, 1981, by Ike Stanford, Don McAlavy and Harold Kilmer. We located 69 cement blocks or field stone marking grave sites and about 30 more graves that had no identification. We found one tombstone with no writing of any kind, in Row 2 near Howard White French.

Located three miles north and 12 miles west of Nara Visa.

It has been downsized in the past, by approximately two thirds. We were told that at one time there were over two dozen unmarked graves. We located very few grave sites.
